Ireland’s National Representation at the 2019 Art Biennale in Venice officially opens

The Irish Pavilion at the 58th International Art Exhibition in Venice has opened on the 8th of May.

Ireland will be represented at the prestigious event this year by Eva Rothchild’s exhibition “The Shrinking Universe” which is curated by Mary Cremin.
The Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Josepha Madigan TD, congratulated Eva Rothchild and Mary Cremin whose proposal was selected under a competitive process managed by Culture Ireland in partnership with the Arts Council.

The Minister said “Eva Rothschild is one of the leading sculptors of her generation and she has an exceptional ability to create connectivity between disparate sculptural elements and present them to the public.  Rothschild is presenting an immersive exhibition of sculptural works that builds on interest in social sculpture and creating environments and is intended to engage public as a viewer and a participant.  Through its direct material presence, the work will engage with current political and environmental concerns arising from our on-going climate of global uncertainty.”

Ireland at Venice is an initiative of Culture Ireland in partnership with the Arts Council. It is an important project in the context of the Government’s Global Ireland initiative which aims to increase Ireland’s global footprint.

The investment of €310,000 in Ireland’s presentation, of which €240,000 was provided by Culture Ireland in the Department of Culture Heritage and the Gaeltacht and €70,000 was provided by the Arts Council, is testament to the commitment to support this presentation and Ireland’s cultural reach globally.

The Irish pavilion was opened this evening by Yvonne Farrell, one of Ireland’s recently appointed Cultural Ambassadors, who along with her business partner in Grafton Architects, Shelley McNamara, curated the 16th International Architecture Exhibition in Venice in 2018.
