Ireland at Bologna Children’s Book Fair

Next week, Children’s Book Ireland leads the largest ever Irish delegation of Irish publishers at Bologna Children’s Book Fair with Culture Ireland support.

In 2019, a record-breaking twenty Irish authors and illustrators will be in attendance including three children’s laureates; the current Laureate na nÓg Sarah Crossan and two of her predecessors Siobhán Parkinson and Niamh Sharkey; five publishers, three arts organisations and the Laureate na nÓg project.

In addition, upcoming Irish illustrator Flora Delargy from Belfast has been selected alongside 76 other artists from 27 countries around the world to have her work showcased in the annual Illustrators Exhibition.
The Bologna Children's Book Fair is the leading professional fair for children's books in the world. It is the meeting place for all professionals involved with creating and publishing children's books or children’s content. The fair itself - the largest international gathering for the publishing industry for children’s books - has been running for over 50 years and attracts an annual attendance of over 26,000.

Culture Ireland has been supporting the Ireland national stand at Bologna in its current format since 2013 and in 2018, with Culture Ireland support, CBI produced a new Ireland stand which allowed for larger floor area and more efficient use of space. This new eye-catching design and bi-lingual signage as well as increased floor space has generated increased interest and visibility. The major strength of the Irish stand is that it represents both publishers and children’s literature organisations, creating a welcoming and professional stand showcasing all elements of Ireland’s energetic children’s book industry.

In addition to its support of Children Book’s Ireland, Culture Ireland provides travel bursaries to individual Irish publishers (Illustrators Ireland, O’Brien Press, Golden Key Publishing, Little Island Books) to assist with their attendance.
