Exile: Songs and Tales of Irish Australia

Hamer Hall, Adelaide Festival Centre, Factory Theatre, and Brisbane Concert Hall
Melbourne Arts Centre
St Kilda Road

Exile tells the unique story of the Australian Irish in song, imagery, poetry and spoken word, presented in concert, bringing together an exclusive gathering of outstanding selected artists, from Ireland and Australia, in a scripted performance. A number of the artists bring a unique song/tune and story, while others bring particular skills to the rendering of carefully chosen songs.

The songs and tunes follow a timeline that encapsulates seminal moments in Irish Australian History, with four new works commissioned.

Shane Howard was born and raised on the Victorian South-West coast between Warrnambool and Port Fairy, a place of one of the highest concentrations of Irish migration in Australia, where he still lives. His great grandparents migrated from Co Clare, Tipperary and Dublin in the 1850’s, in the wake of the Great Famine. He has toured Ireland, the US, Australia, NZ and Holland with Irish singer, Mary Black, who has recorded several of his songs. He’s also worked with Irish luminaries Liam O’Maonlai, Clannard, Steve Cooney, Seamus Begley, Mossie Scanlon, John Spillane, Declan O’Rourke and the 1997 Guinness Tour of Irish Music.
