As the 2024 edition of Huddersfield Contemporary Music Festival (hcmf\/\/) gets underway, Culture Ireland is pleased to announce that the partnership between the two organisations will be extended for another two years (2025 and 2026 editions). hcmf\/\/ is the UK\u2019s largest international festival of new and experimental music and brings a host of Irish talent to its programme, supported by Culture Ireland.<\/p>\n

Currently in its third year, the international partnership between Culture Ireland and hcmf\/\/ aims to provide opportunities for Irish artists, composers, and ensembles to present their work at hcmf\/\/ and to sustain and develop the opportunity over several years. Both organisations aim to develop British and wider international audiences for the presented works, as well as media opportunities for the artists.<\/p>\n

Graham McKenzie, Artistic Director, hcmf\/\/, commented: \u201cI am delighted that the partnership between Culture Ireland and hcmf\/\/ is to continue for a further two years. The partnership has enabled us to dig deep into the rich vein of talent running through the new music scene right now in Ireland. It is about collaboration in the true sense and the support from Culture Ireland has not only enabled us to platform some of the best work emerging from Ireland at hcmf\/\/ but to disseminate the work and connect the artists to our partner festivals throughout Europe.\u201d<\/p>\n

Sharon Barry, Director, Culture Ireland added: \u201cOur partnership with hcmf\/\/ over the last three years has not only celebrated the current successes of new music from Ireland, it has also been an important platform for emerging artists. We look forward to continuing the success over the next two years.\u201d<\/p>\n

This year\u2019s programme includes the UK Premiere of Ann Cleare\u2019s TERRARIUM, a sonic and visual immersive experience highlighting the changing geological terrain at Lough Boora, Ireland, performed by Crash Ensemble and created in collaboration with site responsive artists Lay of the Land and videographer and director Laura Sheehan.<\/p>\n

Belfast-based Hard Rain SoloistEnsemble will present the World Premiere of their new programme \u2018Irish Forests, Rivers and Peatlands\u2019 as part of the festival, exploring the intertwining of instrumental and environmental sound worlds. Multidisciplinary composer Paul Scully builds on his previous work around the philosophy of ecology in a new World Premiere exploring the uncanny experience of being a human at this stage of the Anthropocene so close to ecological disaster \u2013 our strange awareness of our entanglement in climate change.<\/p>\n

The programme also includes work from Shovel Dance Collective, who will perform a continuous longform composition arranged for the festival entwining pre-existing source material with drones, extended techniques and their own improvisatory practices.<\/p>\n
