Many emerging Irish musicians have had substantial successes at SXSW in the past and have gone on to become household names. SXSW Music Programmer Casper Mills commented: “With past festival showcase line-ups including Villagers, Lisa Hannigan, James Vincent McMorrow, Saint Sister. Villagers, Rusangano Family, Hozier, Kodaline, and many, many more, Music from Ireland’s official SXSW showcase is always a highlight for us and the international delegates who come to SXSW to do business.”
The track record of successes of the Music from Ireland programme at South by Southwest has been substantial in recent years and both Culture Ireland and First Music Contact are committed to expanding on this with the current crop of emerging Irish talent.
In addition to music, South by Southwest Conference & Festivals in March celebrate the convergence of the interactive and film industries. In 2017 Culture Ireland is supporting the screening of Song of Granite a feature film by acclaimed director Pat Collins at the SXSW Film Festival, Texas on 12 March 2017. Song of Granite revolves around the life of the great traditional Irish singer, Joe Heaney who was shaped in part by the harsh landscape combined with the myths, fables and songs of his Connemara childhood.
