Minister Madigan Announces New Members to the Culture Ireland Expert Advisory Committee

Josepha Madigan, T.D. Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht today announced new members to the Culture Ireland Expert Advisory Committee.

Culture Ireland was established in 2005 as a Division of the Department of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht to promote and advance Irish arts worldwide, strengthening Ireland’s cultural profile and global reputation and increasing career opportunities for Irish artists globally.

The Chair of the Expert Advisory Committee, Kevin Rafter, Professor and Head of the School of Communications at Dublin City University, will be joined by new members, Liz Doherty, Irish fiddle player and lecturer, Somhairle MacConghail, Arts Officer, Monaghan County Council,  Kieran Hanrahan, radio presenter and artistic director of Tradfest  and re-appointed members Maureen Kennelly, Director, Poetry Ireland  and Josephine Kelliher, curator and producer in visual arts.

Senior representatives from the Departments of Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Foreign Affairs and Trade,  the Arts Council,  the IDA,  Tourism Ireland and the Irish Film Board who will continue to serve on the Committee on an ex-officio basis.   This interagency representation on the committee seeks to ensure complementarities and a whole-of-Government approach on international promotion.

Announcing the new Expert Advisory Committee the Minister said “The Expert Advisory plays a key role directing the implementation of Culture Ireland’s strategy to maximise the cultural impact of the Government’s international promotion strategy and generate new career opportunities globally for Irish artists. As can be seen this week in particular with over 100 Culture Ireland supported events over the St Patricks day period, it is for our artists and creativity that Ireland is known worldwide. “

Kevin Rafter said “Culture Ireland does an important job in introducing international audiences to the work of Irish artists. I am delighted to take on this role and look forward to working with my colleagues on the Expert Advisory Committee.”
