Irish Film Festivals in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York in September and October
From the West to the East Coast, three Irish Film Festivals are working together to present contemporary Irish films in Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York.
This collaboration across three festivals - the LA Irish Film Festival from September 26th to 30th; the San Francisco Irish Film Festival from September 28th to 30th; and the New York Irish Film Festival from October 4th to 7th - is based on an initiative developed during Imagine Ireland in 2011.
Emmy Award winning film director Niall McKay will be heading up the presentation. Niall has extensive experience as a festival programmer. He is the Founder and Director of Irish Film New York and the San Francisco Irish Film Festival. Last year, over 1,000 people attended the first Irish Film New York, and Niall brought six filmmakers and producers to present work in New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Fantastic Fest in Austin.
Working closely with Niall is the founder of the Los Angeles Irish Film Festival, Lisa McLaughlin. In celebration of the Los Angeles Irish Film Festival's fifth year in 2012, a traditional Irish currach will be built by Donal Mac Polin, an artisan/boatwright from Donegal. This represents the Festival theme of 'Sea of Exchange', a reflection on the emigration of people as well as films. A symbolic vessel of this exchange, the currach will be built over five days throughout the festival, with a ceremonial launch in the Pacific Ocean planned for the fifth day.
