Acton Town to Cork City is the artist’s own story of her family’s return from Britain to Ireland in the 1970s. The artist has photographed her family’s belongings which were packed for shipping.
Acton Town to Cork City captures an arrested moment, a family in transit who attempt to find comfort in possession of the familiar. They return to their own country to find it has become unknown to them and which they must negotiate afresh.
This project traces the lives of Reardon's Irish parents in London, their sojourn in Acton and their eventual move back to Cork in 1972. The visual imagery captures the moment when the family were between two places, the childhood objects and artefacts that were transferred from one reality to another. Objects in bright colours, optimistic emblems of change and unexpected loss. Marcella Reardon is a visual artist based in Youghal, Co. Cork.
