Baboró was originally conceived and nurtured under the auspices of Galway Arts Festival. In 1997, it was decided to create an independent festival, offering a fully formed multi-arts programme to schools during the month of October in Galway and surrounding areas.

Baboró brings the most diverse selection of the finest in performing arts from Ireland and around the world to its annual one-week festival in Galway. The festival programme which varies from year to year is especially created for young audiences and their families. In particular, the festival ensures that its programme is creative and engaging for children. It also organises Baboró on Tour to show performances by visiting artists around Ireland and creates opportunities for discussion and networking. The festival is supported by Culture Ireland through the 'See Here' scheme designed to promote the inward travel of international promoters and programmers to see work in Ireland with a view to booking the work for their venue or festival.
