Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh, fiddle player and Irish singer with the Irish band Altan, comes to the Irish Cultural Centre with members of her amazing musical family band Na Mooneys, comprising of two generations of her family. as well as neighbours and friends
Growing up in Gaoth Dobhair, (Gweedore,) County Donegal, Na Mooney’s were, steeped in Irish traditional music and song. As children they learned tunes and songs from their neighbours and also from their father, the great Donegal fiddle player, Proinsias Ó Maonaigh. So it is not surprising that Na Mooney’s have become one of the most talented musical families in the whole of Ireland.
Mairéad Ní Mhaonaigh is a member of ALTAN, and she is also currently in ‘String Sisters’ which features the greatest Celtic female fiddle players in the world. Her sister Anna Ní Mhaonaigh is a member of the magnificent Irish women’s group ‘Macalla’. Their brother Gearóid, the exceptional guitarist, is also in Altan and he is a member of ‘Ceoltóirí’ and ‘Ragairne’. His son Ciarán is a fast rising star of Irish fiddle and along with is wife Caitlín Nic Gabhann, they are one of the most exciting young ‘trad’ duos to be found in Ireland today; Nia is also a talented young fiddle player and rising musical star! and joining them all will be the multi instrumentalist Manus Lunny, a leading member of the Celtic Super-group Capercaillie.
